The inspiration hit me for this piece when I was driving on Interstate 17 heading north from Phoenix to Prescott; thankfully there was an exit nearby and I drove west towards the shadows blanketing the mountains. I was fascinated with how they seemed to create a jigsaw pattern of light and shadow over the folds of land; that looked as graceful as a draped blanket but that I knew to be rough and rugged terrain. The rest of the painting (foreground, clouds, etc) I just added to suit that initial light and shadow pattern, with the saguaro cacti standing as sentinels to guard the way into the painting. This was a fun one to paint :)
